How has your makeup style evolved since you started?

What I consider most important is natural beauty. This message has been a consistent part of my communication over the past 30 years. Every individual possesses a unique combination of lines, colors, and textures, and it’s through makeup that I help unveil their inherent beauty. Having worked with countless faces over 30 years, I’ve encountered a rich tapestry of diversity and individuality. Each interaction has been a lesson in understanding and celebrating the distinctive features that make every person special. What truly fuels my passion is witnessing the transformation that occurs when someone embraces their natural beauty. It’s a joy to see confidence bloom as they recognise and appreciate their own uniqueness. For me, makeup isn’t just about enhancing appearances; it’s about empowering individuals to embrace their authenticity and shine from within.

Having worked with some of the most illustrious names in fashion throughout your career, from Lee Hyo-Lee to Song Hye-Kyo and many more, what are some of the ways they have inspired you?

The impact and inspiration that stars provide me with are tremendous. Those who work diligently and give their best in their respective fields have succeeded, and even now, after a long time, they continue to maintain their position at the top. From those I’ve collaborated with, I’ve learned about exceptional self-management and a professional approach to every project and activity. Many of the top celebrities I’ve worked with have ultimately played a key role in shaping K-beauty, and I deeply respect and take pride in that.

As a trailblazer in the beauty industry, how do you stay inspired and continue to innovate?

Whenever I meet people who lack confidence in their own beauty, I still feel that I have much work to do. To me, everyone’s unique personality and beauty are visible, even when they themselves may not recognize it. I currently reside in Singapore and provide makeup services at the Jung Saem Mool flagship store. Even in Singapore, I encounter a diverse range of clients. Occasionally, some customers express concerns and doubts about how their appearance will change when they start wearing makeup. However, witnessing their satisfaction as they discover new strengths and individuality in their completed look reaffirms my sense of purpose and happiness. When I see individuals who hide their natural beauty behind exaggerated makeup, I feel a desire to highlight their inner and present beauty. It’s this drive and purpose that continually inspire me to develop makeup products and techniques.

What is your makeup philosophy? Can you walk us through your seven-pronged approach to makeup application?

My Key 7 principles can be summarised as contrast and balance – ‘Thin & Thick’, ‘Warm & Cool’, ‘Wet & Dry’, ‘Lost & Found’, ‘Simple & Complex’, ‘Focal Point’ and ‘Old & New’. For example, using a creamier (wet) texture concealer and foundation underneath and applying fine flat-cut powder (dry) will adhere well and allow the makeup to last longer. Another example is when the eye makeup is strong (complex), the lip makeup should be more toned down (simple) to give it a more effortless look. The beauty products we use are guided by these 7 core principles that I adhere to.

What are some essential skin prep products that we need to try?

I recommend using the “Mool cream” as part of your pre-makeup routine. The term “Mool” translates to “water” in English. As the name suggests, it flows like an essence but still serves the purpose of a cream. Creating this unique cream formulation required significant effort. Despite facing challenges with achieving a non-flowing, opaque texture, we persisted. Eventually, we succeeded in developing a transparent, flowing water cream. The Mool cream, with its specific texture and ingredients, helps combat skin dryness for 24 to 36 hours. When the Mool Cream meets your skin’s temperature, it adheres smoothly, creating a velvety base for applying foundation. This allows for a seamless and smooth finish. If you’re looking to achieve a radiant yet natural-looking makeup, be sure to try the Mool cream!

Could you tell us how you can achieve a natural look using an easy makeup technique?

Make sure to utilise the palette in our cushion product. Applying the puff directly to your face without adjusting the amount can be challenging. If you apply the cushion directly to your face without adjusting, it can result in thick makeup that sits on the surface, emphasising texture and settling into wrinkles. Additionally, always absorb the puff with a cloth or tissue to keep it soft and fluffy. When dealing with dry skin, mix a small amount of “Mool Cream” from the palette with the cushion for a dewy finish, preventing makeup from appearing too heavy or sitting on the skin.

Could you share with us some tips and tricks to achieving long-lasting makeup in hot, humid weather?

I’m living in Singapore, which is also a hot and humid city. Please remember the following tips I’m sharing with you!

First, temperature control: When your skin temperature is high, base makeup doesn’t absorb well and pores may appear larger. Therefore, temperature control is crucial. Store your skincare products in the refrigerator and use them when they’re cool. Second, amount adjustment: Skin consists of both thick and thin tissues. For areas with thicker tissue (like the forehead and cheeks), apply makeup more generously. For areas with more sweat and enlarged pores (such as around the nose and chin), apply makeup more lightly. If your makeup fades over time or due to sweating, gently remove it and reapply for a natural, maintained make up.
