INTO THE BLUE
Your denim faithfuls, reborn
Words by Joey Wong
Jeans and a white tee: a combination both the style savvy and mere mortals swear by. We know you have your favourites; most likely the jeans you lovingly thrifted from a wayward vintage brick-and-mortar that miraculously fit like a glove, or the sashiko-stitched FDMTL pair from seasons past that has woven itself into the fabric of your style identity. But what’s another pair? Here are our autumn picks that are you’re guaranteed to love.
THE STRAIGHT CUT
The signature super skinnies that skip through Hedi Slimane’s imagination carve out a very specific aesthetic. Cool? Maybe. Timeless? Hardly. Practical? Not a chance. Anything thicker than a dollar bill will require some unfortunate hand-holding. Instead, opt for a fit this season that’s a little less lean, with a little more breathing room. You’ll have these classic selvedge straight-cuts from Frame for a very, very long time.
THE CREATIVE
The sometimes-whiskered and sometimes-ripped weave of blue denim is a familiar sight within wardrobes worldwide. Now, there’s a time and a place for these classic blueprints, but there is a time and place for fun, too. That means embellishments, trims and embroidery. This season we’re coveting Japanese sashiko stitching, and frayed patchwork surfaces that turn a blank indigo canvas into museum-worthy artefacts.
THE SHACKET
The classic denim trucker is flap-pocketed and cut boxy. It’s a timeless silhouette, but it’s lacking in imagination. Expand your sartorial horizons with Bottega Veneta’s short-sleeved denim shirt fashioned with a single forest green button — a piece to be styled as a jacket. Or, try FDMTL’s iteration, patchworked in shades of indigo that are a little different every time.
