The Weejuns Loafers

Since becoming the sole owner of a local tannery in Maine in the late 1800s, George Henry Bass never looked back. Officially called G.H. Bass & Co., it was a chance shoe discovery in Norway that led to their most iconic piece – the Weejuns loafers.

A play on the word “Norwegians”, the Weejuns were introduced into their line up in 1936, becoming an instant success with both men and women. In the 40’s and 50’s, people began slipping dimes into the slits of the Weejuns – hence the term “penny loafer.” When King of Pop Michael Jackson was seen making his moves wearing a pair of Bass Weejuns in his 1983 “Thriller” music video, the shoe was affixed as one of the most definitive emblems of American history.

The Technique

The moment you slip your foot into a pair of Weejuns, you know it was built to last.
Using the same construction method as introduced in 1936, the genuine moccasin construction is synonymous with enduring quality and style. With each pair painstakingly hand-sewn together, details like premium leather materials and the classic “penny keeper” strap make for an everlasting style.

Watch and discover what it takes to make a pair of Weejuns loafers.

The Pop-Up

Inspired by their American heritage and a collegiate aesthetic, the Bass Spring/Summer 2013 collection is set against a display of vintage spray-painted luggage. Incorporating classic elements with a kick, expect to see bold pops of colour, retro scarf prints and graphic monochromes.

View these styles and more at Lane Crawford Canton Road Until April 19th.
