5 STEPS TO REORGANISING YOUR CLOSET

There’s a method to the madness

Words by Bridget Barnett

Starting fresh is a concept that might be more aspirational than actionable—unless it refers to your wardrobe. In fact, it's as necessary as it is easy!

First, conduct a clean-out. Second, extend the life cycle of your clothes (Lane Crawford Joyce Group’s LUXARITY is a great initiative to help you do this – they collect pre-loved pieces that are resold to help fund grants around sustainable development goals). Third, evaluate all that remains and streamline the process.

Here are our five steps to success.

STEP 1: IDENTIFY KEY PIECES

To get started, pull out all the items in your wardrobe that you’re most likely to reach for on a weekly basis. These 20 or so pieces should be front and center for easy access, while lesser-worn pieces can be moved to harder-to-reach corners and crevices. For those in city apartments with shoebox-sized wardrobe spaces, these more difficult spots can often be vertically inclined. Pro tip: invest in a step stool.

STEP 2: ORGANISE BY CATEGORY

Organising by category isn’t revolutionary, but it is an essential step to sorting through the bulk of your clothing. From skirts and pants to sweaters and jeans—separate all categories by laying them out so you always know which and how many options you have to pull an outfit together.

STEP 3: CODE BY COLOUR

If you want complete coordination, move in order of ROYGBIV—red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Keep your neutrals on one end, and your whites and blacks on the other. Depending on how much of each shade you have in your collection, you can even take this a step further by then arranging colour-coded pieces by length, making them more identifiable when on display. The same practice can be applied for your shoes and bags, too.

STEP 4: HANG OR STACK

It’s best to stack items that fold well, like jeans, sweaters, undergarments and scarves. Heavy sweaters are a particularly important one to fold, as they can lose their shape on a hanger; the same goes for stretch materials such as Lycra and jersey. Save your hangers for delicate materials that are prone to wrinkles, as well as starched fabrics like cotton and linen. Investing in colour-coordinated coat hangers is a game-changer for keeping your wardrobe looking its best—just be sure to remove plastic garment bags from dry cleaning before hanging as the chemicals can attack fibres and cause damage.

STEP 5: MAINTAIN

While your wardrobe should already be transformed by the time you get to this step, the reality is that it’s easy for things to slowly start creeping back to their old state. This is where maintenance comes in. The more often you dedicate time to keeping on top of things, the less time it will ultimately take, but as a general rule of thumb, commit to a little TLC once a month, and attempt an entire revamp twice a year.
