(Sun)Screen Time
Head-to-toe SPF guide
As children, our mothers often chased us around to apply a thick layer of sunscreen before heading out for some fun in the sun. We resisted, prioritising play over protection. Fast forward to the present, sun protection is no longer saved for beach days to avoid painful sunburns. Rather, it is now an everyday essential - even if we’re just headed to the office.
With the influx of new sun care for any skin type, destination, and activity, it can be hard to figure out what’s what. Before boarding your flight and changing into a swimsuit, read on for a head-to-toe UV protection guide for your face, body, and hair too!
Find what works for your face
If you haven’t made applying sunscreen a daily habit, it might be because you’ve yet to learn the difference between physical and chemical sunscreens. While physical sunscreens work by forming a barrier that reflects UV radiation from skin, chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays into skin and then release the rays as heat. Once you’ve found the right protection that works best on your skin, you’ll have no trouble making it an integral part of your routine.
If you have dry or sensitive skin, turn to physical sunscreens (also known as mineral sunscreens), like SkinCeuticals’ Physical Fusion UV Defense. These tend to be more moisturising and less irritating than their chemical counterparts.
If you’re looking for a sheer and lightweight formula, reach for a chemical sunscreen, such as Lancôme's UV Expert Youth Shield™ Aqua Gel. With their easily absorbed and water-resistant formulas, chemical sunscreens are ideal for days when you’ll be in the water or sweating while playing sports.
Hybrid or combination sunscreens, including Clé de Peau Beauté's UV Protective Cream and La Prairie's Cellular Swiss UV Protection Veil, offer the best of both worlds. They combine the UV-reflective properties of physical sunscreens and the UV-absorbing abilities of chemical sunscreens while providing higher SPF.
The foundation of good skin
We love a multifunctional beauty product, and foundation with built-in SPF speaks to our desire for pared-down skincare routines that leave skin feeling fresh. The only thing better than a long-wear foundation that creates a flawless complexion is one that offers UV protection for youthful skin.

My (beach) body is ready
Using the same sunscreen for your face and body? We’d recommend differentiating. Many body sunscreens are fit for warm-weather activities, formulated to be resistant to heat, water, and perspiration while keeping skin moisturised. If you’re grabbing one tube for the whole family, opt for a gentle option suitable for children’s sensitive skin.
Let your hair down
While the sun’s effects on hair are lesser-known, prolonged exposure can actually damage the cuticle, causing issues such as discolouration, dryness, frizz, split ends, and thinning. Protective hair sprays and conditioners shield, strengthen, and soothe your tresses to achieve optimal colour and radiance. Say hello to permanent good hair days.
